Achieve with Me!
This morning, Year 6 hosted an Achieve with Me session, inviting parents into the classroom to participate in the learning with us.
For our topic this half-term (And the band played on...), we have been studying the Titanic and its fateful journey across the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. This morning, we were focussing on the communication systems that were in place on the Titanic and how communication systems have progressed and become more technologically advanced in the last 110 years.
We started by discussing the use of Morse code (using a Marconi machine) and other old ways of communicating before focussing on the use of semaphore. As part of the lesson, children and parents were tasked with being able to recall their names and to send coded messages using the semaphore alphabet system. We discussed and explored the positives and negatives of this system and the impact it could have if used on the Titanic.
It was wonderful to see so many people attend and lots of fun being had when sending messages across the playground using semaphore flags!
