A Sweet Introduction to Perimeter
In our recent maths lessons, we have been exploring length and perimeter. Today we delved into the concept of perimeter. For those unfamiliar, perimeter is the total sum of the lengths of all the edges of a 2D shape.
To bring this concept to life, we embarked on a hands-on activity that left the children delighted – measuring perimeter using Smarties!
In pairs, the children meticulously measured the perimeters of various 2D shapes, ensuring that their Smarties were placed precisely along the edges. Not only did this activity provide a tangible way to grasp the idea of perimeter, but it also added an element of fun and excitement to the learning process.
Now equipped with a solid understanding of what the perimeter entails and where to measure to calculate it, our next step is to dive deeper into measuring with centimetres for the remainder of this topic.
It's worth noting that while the Smarties may have been sacrificed in the pursuit of knowledge, they certainly weren't wasted – each one was thoroughly enjoyed, adding a deliciously sweet touch to our lesson!
