Exploring Rock Formation: A Cheesy Science Adventure
Today in science we delved into the process of rock formation by getting our hands a little cheesy!
Our adventure began with the creation of sedimentary rocks, a process that mirrored the natural layering found in sedimentary formations. Using different coloured, grated cheese, our students layered the cheese in a bag, simulating the accumulation of sediment over time. With each layer compressed, our cheesy concoction was transformed into a mini sedimentary rock, complete with distinct layers reminiscent of those found in nature.
But the exploration didn't stop there! We pressed and manipulated our cheesy creations in different directions, observing how the layers responded. Some layers became wavy, while others merged together!
Next, we applied heat to our cheesy sedimentary rocks, mimicking the transformative effects of heat and pressure that give rise to metamorphic rocks. As the cheeses melted and melded together, we witnessed firsthand the remarkable changes that occur when sedimentary rocks undergo metamorphosis.
