Journey Stick Maps

This week, we began our new topic with a wonderful art lesson all about making maps! The children were so enthusiastic and shared so much of what they already knew about maps. They knew that pirates use maps to find treasure, that maps can show us places and things, and some children even knew that maps can have labels! These labels help us know where we are and can even show the names of roads.

Next, we read *We’re Going on a Bear Hunt* and made a map of the places and events in the story. We used symbols to represent what happened and labelled the map with lots of brilliant adjectives, which we are also learning about in writing this week!

Afterwards, we went on a walk around the school and made something called a “journey stick”. You might be wondering, what is a journey stick? It’s a stick we use to collect objects as we walk, which help us remember where we’ve been. The children were excellent at recalling where each item came from!

Once back in the classroom, we used our journey sticks to create maps of our walk. The children used symbols and labels to make their maps clear and easy to follow.
