Maths Week – Exploring Money in Year 1

This week has been Maths Week, and Year 1 have been learning all about money! The children have enjoyed exploring different coins and notes, learning to recognise pence and pounds and talking about what they are worth.

In one of our lessons, we used 10 cubes to represent £10 and imagined we were shopping around the classroom. The children chose items to ‘buy’ and practised working out how much money they had left. For example, they might say, “I have £10, I’ve spent £4, so I have £6 left.”

We did lots of talking and reasoning about spending and saving, helping the children to understand not just the value of money but also how to add and subtract amounts in real-life situations.

It’s been a fun and practical week of learning and the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm for using maths in everyday life!
