RAIN Project Experience!

Today, Year 6 enjoyed a visit from the RAIN project team to help us with our current theme focus: rivers!

After a short presentation about flooding, the impact that this can have and what to do in the event of a house flooding, the children were split into three groups to complete three different activities relating to rivers and flooding.

The first activity saw the children creating a poster related to keeping their home and local area safe during a flood. They had to come up with an eye-catching poster to inform and advise people about what they could do should there be a flash flood.

In the second activity, the children worked together in groups to try and create the perfect situation for building a house near a river. They had to move the magnetic pieces around and explore and discuss the positives and negatives of a house’s placement. After that, a hurricane occurred!! The groups then needed to think carefully about how this would affect the land.

As part of the third activity, the children visited the Nene Trust van! While in the van, small groups had to use the interactive game to determine where the best place to build a house would be. They had to work together to move the sand around and create the perfect placement for a house near a river.

Once we had completed our activities, we headed to the playground and field as a whole year group to see what factors and features around the school have been placed to mitigate any flooding. We looked carefully for the placement of trees, shrubs, grass, rain gardens, paved surfaces, slopes, wetlands and ponds. We then ended with a big game of ‘stuck in the flood’!

This was a really fun, inspiring and enjoyable experience and has helped us to explore our theme learning even further in a more practical way!
