This morning, as part of Maths Week, we used the story of ‘Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi’ to investigate the properties of circles and the relationships between them. We measured the circumference of various circular objects, then measured the diameter and looked at how many lots of the diameter fitted into the circumference. We discovered, just like the boy in the story, that it was ‘3 and a bit’ every time – no matter the size of the circle. We discovered that this was Pi – a constant value that is the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of every circle!
