Investigating gravity and upthrust

We have started our new theme this week: ‘And the band played on‘. Throughout, we will be finding out more about that devastating day when The Titanic sank.

In Science, we had a team challenge where we had to create our own tinfoil boats that would hold as many counters as possible. We had to consider the size and shape to ensure it floated even as more counters were added. We talked about how gravity was pulling down on the tinfoil boats and upthrust was pushing up on the tinfoil boats. We found that when we added counters into the boat, the weight of the boat increased, and when the boat sank, the force of gravity on the boat was greater than the upthrust of the water.
