We have been super impressed with all the children over the last couple of weeks. They have settled in brilliantly to year 1 and taken on all the challenges we have set. We love how enthusiastic they have been in their learning and how well they have gelled as year 1 classes.
Over the last 2 weeks we have been focusing on …
English – We’ve worked hard on showing our fantastic handwriting and letter formation, along with labelling and writing captions. We have linked this to our current topic of pirates. We have labelled pirate ships and treasure maps. Written captions to link with pirate pictures – our favourite one was the pirate walking the plank!
In Maths, we have been recapping our knowledge of numbers to 10. We have identified numbers, counted and grouped objects and counted forwards and backwards to 10. We are now working on one more and one less than a given number.
We have a fabulous first topic – Land Ahoy! It is all about pirates. So far we have used maps and atlases to identify the 5 oceans of the world. We have also been busy scientists, investigating how things move and testing our push and pull forces. We have also linked our science to pirates by thinking about different vehicles … we have noticed that pirate ships use wind power to move. This is something that we will be investigating and working on in the coming weeks … watch out for some great design technology coming your way!
In music we have learnt a pirate chant and used actions to help us remember the words. We have begun using our voices in ways to match certain characters – the children have much better pirate voices than the teachers!
Well done to all the year ones for an amazing start to the year – we are very proud of you x
