Negative numbers

Year 6 Blog ArchivedComments Off on Negative numbers

This week, we have brought our place value unit to a close with some work on negative numbers. We used physical number lines and found it extremely useful to draw or visualise a number line. Some of us also spotted some ‘tricks’ we could use to help us to work out differences that crossed zero. The children gave fabulous explanations about what happens to the numbers the further away from 0 you are. We also had a very interesting discussion about whether they thought that 0 was positive, negative or neutral! I was amazed by their mathematical reasoning!
