Science – Investigating water resistance and upthrust

This morning we began to consider the shapes that allow boats to both float and move freely through water. We were given some tinfoil and set the challenge to create a boat that would both float AND carry as many counters as possible. We put our boats to the test and some of the boats held over 100 counters and more! We learnt that boats float when the gravity pulling the boat down and the upthrust of the water are balanced; they sink when the force of gravity was greater than the upthrust of the water.
