Our blogs will be posted each Friday and give you a flavour of what we have been up to during the week. We hope you enjoy seeing the great learning activities taking place and the super stars we have in year 1.
Over the last two weeks we have …
Been to the immersive room to watch a fantastic film about the Arctic Circle. This really got the children excited to find out more. We watched the Northern Lights, heard the Inuits singing and found out about some of the wildlife in the Arctic Circle.
In Maths we have been focusing on fact families, subtraction and counting backwards. The children have produced some wonderful work and are great mathematicians.
During our English lessons we have read the story of The Polar Bears Son. We’ve retold and ordered the story, thought about the moral and described some of the characters. Over the next week the children will be working on changing one of the main characters to produce their own versions of the story.
During our science and geography lessons we have looked at the weather in the Arctic, found out about the Polar Nights and Midnight Sun. The children were challenged to try and keep their ice from melting using materials to try and prevent this. We have named all the countries found in the Arctic Circle and sorted Arctic animals into those that live on land and those that live in the sea.
On Friday afternoon we ventured outside and used the Woodland Workshop and outdoor classroom. The children each planted some bulbs in containers, which we hope will look fantastic in the spring. They also had a great time minibeast hunting, building miniature homes for fairies and gnomes and trying to make a shelter for themselves to sit under. It was a great afternoon!
