Creating cohesion!
This week, we have been getting to grips with cohesive devices...they are less complicated than they sound! After a bit of investigation, we realised that we are already using many of these devices: conjunctions to link words, phrases and clauses; conjunctive adverbs to link ideas between sentences and paragraphs; pronouns to refer back to nouns; a topic sentence to tell the reader what the rest of a paragraph will be about; synonyms to avoid repetition; and ensuring our writing has good tense consistency!
To get to grips with this, we looked at a letter which was lacking cohesion; we improved it by adding a range of cohesive devices and adding a conclusion to ensure the letter had a purpose that was clear to the reader. We used the iPads to edit the text easily.
